Connections come first, and it is not close. Low voltage systems live outdoors in wet soil, and every splice is a potential point of corrosion. Water gets in, copper corrodes, resistance rises, and the fixture downstream dims and then dies.
Transformer problems are second. If an entire zone is dark, the transformer or its timer is the first place to look. Photocells fail, timers lose their schedule after a power outage, and breakers trip quietly.
Voltage drop is third and it is the one homeowners never suspect. On a long run, the fixtures at the far end receive meaningfully less voltage than the ones near the transformer. They look dim, they run yellow rather than white, and their lamps die early. Nothing is broken. The system was designed wrong.
Physical damage is fourth. Landscape crews are hard on lighting. A string trimmer cuts a buried cable, a mower clips a fixture, a shovel goes through a run during bed work. This is extremely common in spring.
Fixture failure is last, and it is the least common. Quality brass and copper fixtures last a very long time. Cheap aluminum ones corrode, crack, and let water in.
What You Can Check Yourself
Before calling anyone, there are a few things worth ruling out.
Check the transformer first. Is it plugged in, is the breaker on, and is the timer or photocell actually calling for light? A surprising number of landscape lighting repair calls end with someone discovering a tripped GFCI outlet.
If one fixture is out, try a fresh lamp if the fixture takes a replaceable one. If the whole zone is out, that points upstream to the transformer or the main run.
Look at the fixtures themselves. Water inside the lens, green corrosion at the socket, or a cracked housing all tell you what happened.
Where to stop is important. Anything involving digging up buried cable, opening the transformer, or working with the line voltage side of the system is not a homeowner job. Low voltage is safe on the fixture side and considerably less forgiving on the supply side.
Repair or Replace

If the fixtures are quality brass or copper and the failure is in the wiring, repair every time. Good fixtures outlive multiple wiring generations. Re landing the connections properly with sealed, waterproof splices often restores a system that looked finished.
If the fixtures are cheap aluminum, corroded through, and the system is running old halogen lamps, the calculation changes. At that point you are pouring labor into hardware that will fail again next season, and it usually makes more sense to look at the true landscape lighting cost of a proper system than to keep patching.
There is a middle path a lot of homeowners take. Keep the good runs, replace the failed fixtures, upgrade the lamps to LED, and fix the connections.
